Finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship

A major highlight of my senior year has been reaching the final round of consideration for a Rhodes Scholarship, which funds two years of study at the University of Oxford. Although I was not selected as a Rhodes Scholar, I am very grateful for the opportunity to be considered alongside some of the most talented and hard-working students in the United States.

Looking back on the Rhodes process, it was an invaluable opportunity for personal growth. Applying for the scholarship required a lot of introspection that has helped me clarify what I want to do after graduation. I worked on my personal statement for several months and learned strategies for communicating my motivations, goals, and story. With the help of a supportive community at the university, I prepared through a series of practice interviews and discussions with mentors.

Another highlight of the Rhodes finalist experience was the amazing people I spend time with along the way. I went through the process with two of my good friends at the University of Mississippi. Together, we drove to Birmingham, Alabama where we met an incredibly accomplished group of other students from Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Puerto Rico. Spending more than eight hours together over the course of two days, we exchanged stories and got to know each other while waiting for our respective interviews with the selection committee.

Waiting to hear back from the selection committee.

I’ve shared the personal statement that I wrote for the Rhodes application on Medium and hope you enjoy it.
